  Scientists at the University of California San Diego implanted the dengue immune proteins, called antibodies, into female mosquitoes.

  Antibodies are created naturally by the body and are what enables the immune system to destroy bacteria and viruses by itself without medical help.  But someone must become infected with, or exposed to, an illness before the body is able to develop them, which is risky with such a deadly disease.

  The researchers found putting human dengue antibodies into mosquitoes stopped the disease spreading among the insects.  And by engineering the genes of the insects to make sure those with the antibodies inside them were successful breeders, researchers said it would be possible to make this immunity spread through the wild population of the insects.  

Professor Omar Akbari, who led the study, said:  "Once the female mosquito takes in blood, the antibody is activated and expressed--that's the trigger.  The antibody is able to hinder the replication of the virus and prevent its dissemination throughout the mosquito, which then prevents its transmission to humans. It's a powerful approach.  It is fascinating that we now can transfer genes from the human immune system to confer immunity to mosquitoes."…

  Professor Alphey cautioned that a small mutation in the dengue virus would make it resistant to the antibody which the scientists used, thus able to spread again.

9-20-19  In fact the genes that were passed on weren't the tweaked genes that were designed to kill and tag the mosquitoes but rather genes from the strains in Cuba and Mexico, according to Science magazine.  The researchers also noted that this mixing of genes might have led to a "more robust population," perhaps one that would be better able to resist insecticides or transmit diseases, Science magazine reported.

Once the drugs were made, they would be moved by private yachts and through unpoliced ports, according to security experts in Kenya.

Analysts say a lack of regulatory oversight has created favourable conditions for the mass production and exportation of synthetic opioids and other chemicals between the Asian countries and Africa….

“Unlike China, India does not have the controls and as a result, you have many pharmaceutical companies producing vast amounts of drugs that get diverted into the black market,” Franklin said.  “As you walk into a chemist here in Nairobi, you can buy a tramadol for US$1 a tablet.”

This action coincided with the sentencing in New York of Kenyan drug kingpin Baktash Akasha to 25 years in prison. Baktash’s brother, Ibrahim, who has pleaded guilty to charges of trafficking drugs to the United States, is to be sentenced in November.

Documents related to the Akasha brothers’ cases, filed in a district court in New York state, give a rare glimpse into how Asian countries such as China, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran may be fuelling the drug-abuse crisis on the Kenyan coast and in other African cities such as Lagos in Nigeria, and Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria in South Africa.

Cocaine from South American countries such as Colombia and Bolivia is trafficked through Africa, and especially via East, West and North Africa, en route to lucrative markets in Europe.

But trade is not as prominent in cocaine as in heroin, according to security experts that track narcotics trafficking trends.

Kenyan-based Security Advisory Services consultant Andrew Franklin said India was a huge source of tramadol – a form of opioid – that had spread all over Nigeria and was readily available over the counter in Kenya.

He said most precursors were used to make fentanyl, a synthetic heroin. Franklin, a former US Marine, said that although South Africa had very strict drug control laws, heroin use was high.

South Africa also had many ports and an advanced transport network covering most of Southern and Central Africa that made distributing the drugs easy, Franklin said.

11-20-2008    Usually only one kind of virus infects a cell at any one time. Sometimes, though, two different kinds of virus can infect the same cell. This can sometimes result in a new virus made up of parts of the other two. But this only happens in very special cases.

  One such example was the Spanish flu. This disease spread worldwide right after World War I and killed upwards of 25 million people. The virus that caused the Spanish flu didn't exist before 1918. Experts think that it was a mix of human and bird flu viruses.

  Most likely someone was infected by both a bird and a human flu virus. The bird flu probably picked up some parts from the human virus that made it easier to spread and harder for the body to fight off.  But this kind of thing can't happen with the cold virus and Ebola. To be able to do this kind of mixing and matching, the viruses need to have very similar genetic material. And the cold virus and Ebola do not.

  Mixing and matching of genes is called recombination.  It can only happen between two pieces of DNA or RNA that have sections that are very similar. This is so the two pieces of genetic material can line up with each other and swap at these points….

The instructions for making new viruses are contained in a virus' genes. Each kind of virus has a different set of genes arranged in a different way.  What this means is that when two very different viruses recombine, the new virus will have a jumble of genes. Some genes needed to hijack a cell might go missing. Or those needed to make the outside of the virus might go missing.

  Or there might be duplicates of genes so that a mix of two shell proteins gets made. Or any number of other possibilities. The end result will almost certainly be something that can't do much of anything. And certainly not be a killer cold/Ebola virus!  While this is pretty much impossible in nature, it might be possible in a lab….

  In the past few years scientists have been able to create life (sort of). For example, at the beginning of 2008 scientists made a bacteria's DNA from scratch. Then they stuck it into a bacterium. The bacterium now used this new DNA as its instruction manual. Voila, life.

  Scientists have also created viruses from scratch. Because they are so simple, this is even easier than making a bacterium.

  Scientists had to stitch together 580,000 DNA letters in the right order to make a bacteria.  An Ebola virus only takes 19,000. And a cold virus 7,200!

  So scientists can pretty easily make an Ebola virus or a cold virus in the lab. But combining them into a supervirus is a whole different story.  By
